San Antonio's Luminaria: A Festival of Arts and Culture

San Antonio’s Luminaria: A Festival of Arts and Culture

If you could have one day that celebrates New Year’s Eve, the Fourth of July, the circus and all of the arts, what would you call it?

San Antonio calls it Luminaria.

In just its second year, each March this arts festival turns the city into one gigantic street party, and 100,000 people from babies to grandparents come to experience it.

Theatrical performances, music from rock to classical, dance, even San Antonio’s fine version of the Three Tenors, strut their stuff, mostly outdoors, in this town’s gentle March weather.

The city lets loose its enormous wealth of artists for Luminaria; we saw Alex Rubio block print his giant painting in the street, with the help of a lawn roller, to the applause of delighted onlookers.

Original videos are projected on the front wall of the Alamo on this night.

Fire eaters, mimes, the San Diego Symphony, poetry readings, midnight fireworks, everything takes place for the pleasure of the public.

The best part of Luminaria?  It’s all free.
